CHAPTER
I
INTRODUCTION
1.1
Background
of the Study
New
Information Technology (IT) is almost everywhere and has dramatically altered
the way we live. These tools have become valued elements of life in Nigeria and
Kaduna state because they opened many doors to youth and allowed them to
interact freely and markedly unlike at any other time in history. (Barton,
2021).
Every
society have been hit by new generations of youth coming from different
endeavors with quite a decent knowledge about information technology and how to
use its tools especially cellular phones and computers. With the rise of
digital media, people are investing more and more enthusiasm on the internet.
(Barton, 2021)
TikTok
is one of the most popular apps on social media, offering the world’s prominent
destination for creating short-form mobile videos in Asia, the United States,
and other parts of the world. It emerged from the founders of the app called
Musical. Ly (Zhang Yiming). TikTok, also
known as Douyin in China, started in September 2016 and is maintained by Byte
Dance. This media app is accessible in over 150 marketplaces and in 75
languages. (Hallanan, 2018).
TikTok
has generated a modern trend among teenagers, allowing users to make and share
short 15 to 60-second videos and choose songs, effects, or soundbites. An
additional benefit is the collaboration feature, where they can do a ‟duet‟
with someone by responding to their video, resulting in a limitless chain of
responses.
The
amount of time individuals spend interacting via social media has significantly
grown in recent years due to the growth of technology and social media. Social
media use has permeated many young adults’ everyday lives and has even become a
part of who they are. 90% of young adults routinely utilized social media platforms
including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook as of 2015. (Barton, 2021). This has
had a tremendous impact on how individuals connect, communicate, and acquire
information.
The
way individuals engage with one another, share information, and consume
entertainment has been changed by social media sites like Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. With more than 4.2 billion users globally,
social media has ingrained itself into many people’s everyday lives. According
to research, young people spend an average of 8-10 hours a day surfing,
enjoying, and publishing on social networking platforms (Wood, 2014).
Young
people across the world have become quite used to the social media site TikTok.
The app's revolutionary features, which make it simple for users to make and
share interesting shortform films, keep up with trends, and engage with a large
user base, are responsible for its popularity. The most downloaded app of 2022
and 2023 is TikTok, which has expanded quickly to become the hottest app of
2023 (Lee, 2023) and has remained so since (Koetsier, 2023). Because of the
users’ usage of TikTok for amusement, self-expression, and social interaction,
it has become a phenomenon in culture. The majority of TikTok's 500 million
users are in the pre- to late adolescent age range. The ability for users to
become someone on the platform is one of TikTok's distinctive features (Leight,
2019). Yet, since the platform’s introduction in 2017, some experts in the
music business have credited TikTok with helping to discover and promote new
artists (Bereznak, 2019).
In
Tiktok, millions of youths aged 12 – 20 years old share their short
videos. It has made teenagers connect
not only to their age group but also expose them to people outside their peer
groups. Teenagers, due to their level of exposure, most of the time, want to
take chances and participate in dangerous activities where social media
interaction encourages their risk-taking urges (Fanni et al., 2017). On
average, individuals spend 151 minutes on social media each day (Dixon, 2022).
The
majority of TikTok users are teens and young adults. Culture Intelligence
(2022) reports that globally, 66% of TikTok users are under 30 years old. As of
August 2020, 100 million people in the United States used the app every month,
and 50 million used it daily. On average, users open the app eight times a day
and use it for about five minutes each time. In 2020, 29% of teenagers
worldwide confirmed TikTok is their favorite social media platform compared to
only 4% in 2019. The biggest TikTok star so far is a teenager, dancer Charli
Grace D’Amelio, age 16, who has over 105 million followers. In Nigeria, some of
the most popular influencers of Tiktok social media platform include Nollywood
actors, Kunle Remi, Iyabo Ojo, Genevieve Nnaji, and music producer, Don Jazzy
and so on.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
TikTok
is one of the applications of social media that is perceived to be encouraging
immorality among the youths in Nigeria. Immorality is an antisocial behavior
which is posing a threat to cultural values and acceptable behavior of the
youths in Nigeria (Oloyode & Oloyede, 2022).
Through
TikTok, pornography, lesbianism, homosexualism, derogatory and disparaging,
cyberbullying, indecent dressing, and violent messages are promoted.
Cyberbullying, lesbianism, homosexualism, pornography, and derogatory and
disparaging remarks usually leading to violent acts have been traced to
improper use of social media.
A
morally decadent society is on its way to ruin. Although TikTok is said to have
promoted inclusivity and diversity, there are problems with the promotion of
ethical standards by TikTok.
Although
social media offers numerous advantages, such as promoting communication and
connection, there are also worries about its detrimental impact on
relationships, social behaviour, and mental health. Despite TikTok's rising
popularity, young people still don’t fully comprehend the benefits and
applications of the program.
In
particular, This study on the uses of TikTok among young people in Kamazou,
