The impacts of wedding events on the tourism development of the Host Community.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background of the Study

Tourism refers to movement, stay and activities of individual who leaves his place of normal residence temporarily to a new destination for a variety of purposes. Thus, the tripodal structure of tourism becomes evident: travel, stay and purpose. While travel implies transportation, stay denotes hospitality and purpose translates into destination, activities and motivation. Purpose precedes the other two components of tourism. This is because it is purpose that stimulates the urge to embark on tourism.

Various purposes for tourism are outlined by Okoli (2001) to include:

Economic purposes: To attend business meetings, trade fairs, expos, etc.

Social purposes: Weddings, anniversaries, burials, child christening, birthdays, cultural festivals, celebrations, etc.

Educational purposes: Seminars, conferences, workshops, matriculations, convocations, etc.

Religious Purposes: Pilgrimages, crusades, conventions etc,

Political Purposes: Conventions, congresses, etc

All these purposes as enumerated above are generally public functions or activities involving participation of a large number of people. They are events. Therefore, tourism is triggered by the urge of people to attend, observe and participate in events. Events stimulate tourism and boost the demand for hospitality – the subsection of tourism that provides accommodation, catering services and entertainment to tourists and travelers. Modern technologies have greatly impacted transportation and communication and the resulting globalization has pushed businesses across national boundaries and increased connectivity among peoples and nations. Okoli (2001)

Tourism has traditionally focused on leisure, but has evolved to include events as a major component of a destination's appeal. Wedding tourism, in particular, has seen significant growth and is now a relevant and growing niche in event tourism. This growth is often driven by factors like unique venues, cultural experiences, and attractive climates, making destinations a prime choice for destination weddings. Colombo, (2016)

Wedding events are more than just celebrations; they are "social and cultural" events that require careful planning, organization, and execution to be successful.  They involve a diverse range of stakeholders, including families, local businesses, and government bodies, requiring high levels of coordination for success. The scale and quality of events have increased significantly, with a greater need for professional management to attract guests and create a positive impression. Connell, et al., (2015)

Events impact host communities economically, socially, and culturally through direct and indirect interactions between tourists and locals. Traditional tourism studies have often focused on large-scale, mass-market tourism, leaving a gap in understanding the specific dynamics of event-based tourism, especially concerning the host community.

The tourism development of the host community is not yet fully understood, including the potential benefits and negative consequences. Existing research provides some evidence of the positive economic contributions of wedding tourism, such as generating revenue for local businesses and increasing employment. Lu, et al., (2019)

However, there is less understanding of how these events contribute to sustainable tourism development, particularly in terms of social and cultural impacts on the host community. This study aims to bridge this knowledge gap by specifically analyzing the impact of wedding events on the tourism development of the host community, providing insights into both the opportunities and challenges.

1.2   Statement of the problem

Wedding events drive economic activity by creating jobs, increasing local business revenue, and potentially contributing to infrastructure development but the problem is the lack of comprehensive understanding of how the growing wedding tourism industry impacts a host community's development, as the economic benefits are often accompanied by significant and sometimes conflicting socio-cultural and environmental pressures.

While destination weddings can boost local economies through job creation and infrastructure development, there is a significant gap in knowledge regarding how to balance this economic gain with the potential negative consequences, such as cultural commodification, resource strain, and environmental degradation. As such, this study will investigate and quantify the overall net impact of wedding events on tourism development, including both the positive contributions and the negative consequences for the host community.

1.3     Objectives of the Study

The objectives of the study are:

1.                 To analyze the economic effects (e.g., job creation, revenue generation) of wedding events on the host community

2.                 To evaluate the socio-cultural impacts (e.g., local pride, community development) of wedding events on the host community

3.                 To assess the environmental effects of wedding events on the tourism development of the host community

4.                 To examine how wedding events contribute to the overall tourism development and positioning of the host community as a tourist destination

1.4     Significance of the Study

The research work after successfully concluded will be relevant to the following group.

For policymakers and tourism administrators

This study will provides data for developing and implementing effective strategies for planning, marketing, and managing wedding tourism, helps create policies that balance economic growth with the need to preserve cultural heritage and protect the local environment and offers a framework for assessing and mitigating negative consequences, such as increased strain on local resources or environmental damage, and identifying potential risks.

For local communities

The study will highlights how wedding events can create jobs, generate income, and enhance local infrastructure, provides insights into how wedding tourism can strengthen local identity and traditions or, conversely, leads to their erosion, guiding efforts to preserve and promote local culture and helps local vendors and service providers understand how to best capitalize on wedding tourism.

For academic and research purposes

This study will contributes to the body of literature on event tourism, particularly the niche of destination weddings, which is a growing area of interest, it adds empirical data to the discussion on the impacts of tourism, moving beyond theoretical discussions to provide concrete, evidence-based findings and it will contribute to the development of practical models for managing wedding events sustainably.

1.5    Scope Of The Study

The research topic is: “The impacts of wedding events on the tourism development of the Host Community. The scope of this research project is to examine both the positive and negative impact wedding events on a host community’s tourism development.

1.6    Research Questions

1.                 What are the economic effects (e.g., job creation, revenue generation) of wedding events on the host community

2.                 What are the socio-cultural impacts (e.g., local pride, community development) of wedding events on the host community

3.                 What are the environmental effects of wedding events on the tourism development of the host community
