the design and production of a school bag using tortoise inspired design

CHAPTER ONE Introduction 1.1 Background of the Study Fashion, which is largely associated with clothing and dress designs, it does not come all alone, but is always associated with certain accessories, which are also covered under fashion design. Such accessories, though small in size and do not take much space, but are fundamental elements of fashion design in terms of enhancing the overall look and giving a complete look to a person. Interestingly, clothing and accessories, which are equally important because they together create balance and give an attractive and unique identity to an individual. Bruce H., (2007). Fashion design focuses on apparel and custom ornamentation depending on culturally and socially accepted standards within a particular period. In contrast to costume design, fashion design creates seasonal products and follows several basic concepts. Bruce H., (2007). The concept of style in fashion design varies from designer to designer. Popular fashion designers are often known for their distinct styles that always appear on the clothes that they release for the season. Aside from logos, distinct marks and designs, designers also often integrate common styles to all their fashion products. For example, Prada is known to combine different classical styles to produce modern creations. Each accessory has significant importance and gives a unique look to the respective person and reflects his or her style. For example, bags, belts, goggles, jewelry, watches, footwear, bangles, etc., every item has its own look and identity and, based on that, enhances the look of the wearer. These accessories give completeness to fashion, which ultimately expresses style and individuality. John K., (2009) A bag (also known regionally as a sack) is a common tool in the form of a non-rigid container. The use of bags predates recorded history, with the earliest bags being lengths of animal skin, cotton, or woven plant fibers, folded up at the edges and secured in that shape with strings of the same material. "Bags". Merriam-Webster Dictionary., (2023). Despite their simplicity, bags have been fundamental for the development of human civilization, as they allow people to easily collect loose materials such as berries or food grains, and to transport more items than could readily be carried in the hands. The word probably has its origins in the Norse word baggi, from the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European bhak, but is also comparable to the Welsh baich (load, bundle), and the Greek Τσιαντουλίτσα (Chandulícha, load). Doran, Jeffrey J. (2023). Cheap disposable paper bags and plastic shopping bags are very common varying in size and strength in the retail trade as a convenience for shoppers, and are often supplied by the shop for free or for a small fee. Customers may also take their own shopping bags to use in shops. Although, paper had been used for purposes of wrapping and padding in ancient China since the 2nd century BC, the first use of paper bags (for preserving the flavor of tea) in China came during the later Tang dynasty (618–907 AD). Doran, Jeffrey J. (2023). The school bag is the main accessory of the school boy. It makes it easy to transport school supplies from home to school and vice versa. Practical, it has become aesthetic over the years. Today, more than a functional bag, it reflects the tastes of children and participates in their look. 1.2 Statement of the Problem School bags have become more of fashion products due to evolving fashion trends, changing lifestyles and preferences. It is a very pleasant sight to see children proceeding towards schools in groups or alone. Smaller children with their parents and elder children on their bikes present a busy yet colourful scene outside the school. All of them carry school bags of different types, ranging in sizes from small to big and some are quite stylist in look. However, the peculiarity of the school bag is that it requires a particular amount of sewing and design, because its structure dictates that it is not molded in one piece and the fabric parts must be sewn together by stitching. In addition to sewing, a bag also includes zippers, tags, straps e.t.c all of which can make a difference in quality and style. Hence, this project focuses on the design and production of a school bag using tortoise inspired design. 1.3 Objective of the Study The objectives of this study is to design and produce a school bag using tortoise inspired design 1.4 Scope of the Study This scope of this project covers the design and production of a school bag using tortoise inspired design. 1.5 Significance of the Study The significance of this study is to help sensitize producers/marketers of school bags on the evolving fashion trend in the production of school bags Also, Private sectors, individual, government will also benefit as it will serve as relevant document which will give them more insight on design and production of fashionable school bags.
