CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Tourism is a business activity that caters for the needs of visitors or tourist by producing them with services such as transportation, leisure activities and recreational facilities, accommodation, feeding (catering services) a at particular period of time while away from home (Johnson, 2012). The contemporary tourism market offers a variety of cultural, social, technological experimental and natural products for leisure and business. This has become a strong foundation for sustainable tourism development in many regions of the world (Turner and Freirmuth, 2016). Tourism plays a vital role in the economy of the state. The public and private organization are investing in the tourism industry, development in the tourism sector is inevitable if the state must continue to enjoy the undiscovered and potential wealth of these scenic beauty (Kraft 2012). Tourism is an economic sector able to offer a significant contributing to the economic growth of a region and to the labour market and create occupation opportunities directly and indirectly through the supply of gods and the necessary services for tourist activities. Culturally, tourism is considered as an element of community enrichment; this is attributed to the meeting of different cultures, tourism can positively contribute to the maintenance of environment by protecting, creating and maintaining national parks and other areas (World Tourism Organization, 1996). Tourism village is a new destination developed by either the government or an individual in an effort to equalize development, preserve the environment, they are built and open in addition to increasing the income of the local communities and government as well as providing a new atmosphere for local and foreign tourist (Surjya, 2015). Tourism village adhere to tradition and culture as well as with nature and the environment, the tourist village area should have a variety of supporting facilities to support tourism activities that take place in it, which will facilitate the visitors or tourists in doing tourism activities. The tourism village is a region with a certain area and has the unique potential of unique tourist attractions that can create a blend of tourist attraction and supporting facilities to attract tourist to visit including accommodation, catering services e.t.c (Damanik, 2012). Tourism village in Kaduna Polytechnic provide tourism students with a demonstration resort centre that provide a background practical knowledge it educate students with perspective of what tourism product is ala bout rather than seeing tourism product from a myopic point of view, this provides a good atmosphere for relaxation, serves as viable resources centre for tourism purposes and activities worth visiting by the public. (Keefe, 2017). The development of tourism village has been running so rapidly and spreading in almost all provinces all over the world many new tourist villages have sprung up in various regions trying to capture the opportunities for tourism development. A tourism village must have typical and unique product/attraction potential that can be developed and maintained as tourist attraction to generate income. Tourism sector in Indonesia, China and USA and other parts of the world has become a strategic sector. It is a medium of integration between various development sectors through the development of tourism villages (Lane, 2009). Tourism village in Kaduna Polytechnic will no thrived well without the help of tourism professionals as its management involves the functions of planning, organizing, coordinating, training and proper monitoring. To this end, this research work tends to examine the factors necessary for the effective management of a tourism hut for tourism development in the tourism village of Kaduna Polytechnic. 1.2 Statement of the Problem Tourism sector in Nigeria today have long depend on the government for funding to gain more recognition among other sectors in the economy. In Nigeria, a lot of sectors especially the tourism sector have not been able to reach expected climax in the contribution to the economic and other social benefits in the country due to lack of effective management. Tourism village establishment has suffered a lot of setbacks due to lack of professional to handle the proper functioning and management in the area of maximizing the resources. Tourism village in Kaduna Polytechnic is faced with the problems of effective management and has not helped matte in developing and putting in place the necessary structures for the village huts. Most importantly, when the need for management of these tourism huts at the tourist village is not articulated, it brings about setbacks in the development in the tourism village of Kaduna Polytechnic. 1.3 Objectives of the Study The objectives of this project will be to 1. To examine the types of facilities needed for a good standard tourism village in Kaduna Polytechnic 2. To know the factors necessary for the effective management of a tourism hut in Kaduna Polytechnic 3. To ascertain the major problems associated with the management of a village hut 4. To proffer solutions to the problems associated with the management of tourism village hut in Kaduna Polytechnic 1.4 Significance of the Study The significance of this study is to help sensitize tourism professionals in the field on how to effectively managed and maximize tourism village in Kaduna Polytechnic. Private sectors will also benefit by making right decision when trying to find out where to invest. It will give them more insight on tourism development and its economic benefits. This research work will be of benefit to students and researchers in the field of tourism as well as guide in order to carryout research related to the topic. 1.5 Scope of the Study The scope of the study is factors necessary for the effective management of a tourism hut for tourism development in tourism village of Kaduna Polytechnic. 1.6 Research Questions The following are research questions for this study 1. What types of facilities will be needed for a good hut in the tourism village 2. What are the factors necessary for the effective management of a hut in tourism village 3. What are the major problems associated with the management of a hut tourism village 4. What are the solutions to problems associated with the management of a hut in the tourism village.
